Are you ever worried about the color of your teeth? If so, you’re far from alone. In fact, did you know that Americans spend $1.4 billion dollars every year on home whitening kits? If you’re unhappy with the color of your smile, we recommend giving us a call—but wouldn’t it be nice to avoid the need for a whitening altogether? Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to prevent discolored teeth.

As you probably know, a few external factors can cause discoloration. For example, tobacco can adversely affect the color of your teeth, whether you chew, use a pipe, or smoke cigarettes. Some beverages, such as cola, tea, or coffee, can also stain your teeth. Finally, certain medications have been known to darken teeth.

Still, would you be surprised to learn that some of the problems that can lead to discolored teeth are out of our control? For instance, did you know that your teeth will be discolored as you age? Or that genetics can play a significant role in discolored teeth? Luckily, no matter the cause for your discolored teeth, there are a few options that can help you reach the smile you deserve.

While a whitening kit may be more affordable, did you know that a professional whitening will yield results much more quickly. A professional whitening treatment is also safer than a home treatment. Sadly, at-home treatments may make your teeth more sensitive and can cause permanent damage to your enamel. Also, since at-home kits are not made specifically with you in mind, your gums are more likely to be irritated.
